Dear Parents/Families,

With all of the information going out via media there have been many questions about prevention and safety related to the Novel Coronavirus, which is commonly being referred to as COVID-19.  As a result, we’d like to provide you with some information that may be helpful to you.

First, it is important to note that there are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Michigan.  According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), the risk of outbreak is low at this time.  However, in an effort to be prepared, the governor’s office is urging families to take necessary precautions to limit the spread and impact of COVID-19 in order to help keep yourselves and families safe.

The best prevention for COVID-19, and any other virus, such as those that cause Influenza and the Common Cold, is to:

  • Wash your hands often using soap and warm, running water.Be sure to scrub for a full 20 seconds each time.If you can’t wash, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or upper sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • Remain at home if you are sick and avoid contact with others.
  • Routinely clean frequently-touched surfaces.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) and MDHHS have websites devoted specifically to COVID-19.  Situation summaries are updated daily as needed and can be found at the following links:

  • https://www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/0,5885,7-339-71550_5104_97675---,00.html

There is also basic information and links on the Lapeer County Website:  http://lapeercountyweb.org/

Lapeer County Health Department will continue to work with your school as needed to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.  The most current updates can be found at the above websites, however, if you have additional questions, you may reach our CD nurses by phoning 810-667-0448.
