Safety Communication Letter

The North Branch Board of Education approved an agreement with an outside security company (DM Burr) during its regularly scheduled meeting this past Monday to provide a security guard to our district for the next two months.  There will be no cost to the district for this service. The security guard will be stationed at the high school from 6:45 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. each day. Our high school students were notified this afternoon that the security guard will be reporting tomorrow morning, Thursday, April 12th. He will be visible at our high school campus through the remainder of the school year.  Last week, I notified our Village Mayor, Undersheriff Howe and our outstanding Village Police Officers of our intention to utilize the free services offered to our district.

Six other schools in the area have also made the decision to utilize this free service as well.   Before taking action at the board meeting, the North Branch Board of Education Finance Committee reviewed the qualifications of the security guard who will be assigned to our district.  This individual has an excellent record of service during his six years with DM Burr.

North Branch Schools is investigating options with the North Branch Village to enter into a partnership to secure the services of a School Resource Officer for the 2018-19 school year.  The number one priority for North Branch Area Schools is the safety of its staff and students. We have conducted a school-wide safety drill, sponsored a community forum with Lapeer County Sheriff Scott McKenna, and initiated a District-wide Safety Committee to address all safety concerns.    I applaud our Board of Education for taking advantage of an opportunity to provide additional security measures for our students and staff at no cost to the district.

Please contact me at 810-688-3570 if you have any questions.  I will be in meetings this afternoon until 5 p.m. However, I will be in the office tonight from 6-9 p.m. and will be available to answer questions.
